Motor Fishing Vessels are a common boat suitable for conversion to a live aboard boat and these can be found all over the country either already converted or in need of conversion after being decommissioned.
75' MFV
Massive larch on oak construction, with great potential as live aboard. Complete with 2 diesel gensets and Kelvin 8-cyl diesel engine. Lying: Gloucester. £6000 (SIX THOUSAND POUNDS) "This vessel has now sold".
This is a very large and sturdy vessel of some 75 feet for just £6,000 ?
Well you will need to do some work on her. It sounds as though the vessel is in need of fitting out inside which could be OK if you are good with your hands or have the finances to have it fitted out by someone else.
Sometimes the larger vessels can be a great deal cheaper that smaller ones but that is OK if you need the space as a live aboard.
With a vessel like this I would first of all check that the main engine is in working order and the Hull, Deck and superstructure is in serviceable condition. These are the main things to look for as these will be the most expensive to repair if not up to the job.
This vessel would most likely have been used as a fishing vessel spending day's or even weeks at sea at a time. Due to this they will normally have some degree of accommodation although probably very basic. The main fish hold would be very large and can be converted to good sized living space.
If the 2 generators are in working condition the vessel can be almost self sufficient when completed or sold off to help with the cost of fitting out.
Vessels like these are well worth a look if this is the type of boat you are looking for. Most definitely not suitable for the inland waterways but most river's and coastal moorings would suit a vessel of this size.
At £6,000, say the cost of a second hand car you could have yourself the start of a nice home capable of taking you where ever you want to go. The cost of fitting out could be kept low if you did a lot of the work yourself, if not you could still get a lot of boat for a good price over all.
Remember that with larger vessels, especially wooden one's, comes increased maintenance costs and more costly mooring fees as moorings are normally work out by the length of the vessel.
All the same, if you want the extra space and the ability to use your home then this would be a cheap buy.
