I am sure that all of us at some point have lost our keys. If so you will know how inconvenient this is, not to mention expensive.
You come home to your boat and get your keys out to unlock the door and ... Whoops ... Splash ... and they are gone, into the deep murky water never to be seen again.
Now you can't get into your boat or your car because your car keys were on the key ring as well. I'll leave you to work out where to go from here. Breaking parts of your boat and an expensive locksmith come to mind.
Hassel? You bet.
So how can we avoid this happening?
Here are a few tips so you don't get caught up a stream without a paddle, or in this case on the pontoon without a key!
1. Attach some buoyancy to your keys so they float if dropped in the drink.
You can buy key rings with cork balls attached (not easy to get in your pocket!) that float and other buoyant material filled with air etc. Try Holt.
Make sure you test these first to make sure your keys do float and are not to heavy.
 2. Keep your keys attached to a part of your cloths such as a belt and on a cord. An easy solution that works.
3. Don't keep all your keys on the same key ring. Keep your boat keys and car keys separate so you will only lose one and not everything.
This works well if you keep spares of each set of keys in different places. Your spare boat keys in your car and car keys in your boat.
4. Leave a spare set of keys with a friend or maybe the marina or boatyard. Actually, leaving a spare key with the marina or boatyard is a good idea not only incase you lose your keys. If you are away from your boat and an emergency arises the marina staff can get access to your boat easily to resolve any problems.
I have first hand experience of losing my keys in the water and I can tell you its a right pain in the ar*se when it happens. Don't be fooled into thinking it will never happen to you, follow these simple tips and when it inevitably does happen you will be better prepared.
